FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Blue Jacket Inc. is starting a farmers market and community garden just south of downtown Fort Wayne in the Calhoun Street corridor.
The organization helps ex-offenders re-enter the community and work toward employment. The gardens are planted and maintained by graduates of Blue Jacket’s Career Academy. The produce will then be sold at an economical price to the community.
“This area has been deemed a food desert, which means there is not access to fresh vegetables within walking distance. What’s neat about our garden is we’re right in the middle of a community. All of the neighbors are able to come over here and get fresh vegetables whenever they want,” Jennifer Crickmore, who works for Blue Jacket, said.
The first round of seeds just got planted Saturday morning, but organizers hope to start selling produce within the next month or so.
